He studied at the famous art school of Stadstekenacademie (City Drawing School). He painted historical works and focused on topics or subjects from antiquity and mythology. He was also a well-known landscape artist who traveled in both Germany and Italy doing projects and commissions. His academic figurative male works utilized working class men or rural farm workers.
