ACADEMY (Académies): Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat – France – Jacob’s Struggle with the Angel -1867

OUR THOUGHTS:

A wonderful charcoal rendering dating from circa 1867, done by the legendary Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat (French). A classic academic study with religious themes.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat was a French Academic artist specializing in portraits, male figurative arts, and landscape. He did a strong emphasis on religious themes. He never married and spent most of his life alone, yet was known as a “friendly man with a kind demeanor.” He was a sought after portrait and French Academic artist, who did the male and female figurative.

His works are housed in a museum in the city of Bayonne, France. The museum was created in 1901 when Bayonne-born painter Léon Bonnat gave his extensive personal collections of art – notably an exceptional drawing collection – as well as many of his paintings to the City of Bayonne.
