ABOUT THE ARTIST:

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a realistic genre painting, which deployed the use of mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects with Greco-Roman influences. During his lifetime, he enjoyed much success and fortune in both the United States and France. The work featured above is entitled, “The Battle of The Centaurs.”

His early works were extremely heavy on the male figurative, but in later decades, William-Adolphe Bouguereau branched off into doing female academic drawings, landscapes, and man/woman art. He was also well liked for his formal portraits. A strong salon painter who loved Paris. He had a second home in La Rochelle, where he died.
