Susan Oliver was indeed an American actress, television director, aviator, and author. Born Charlotte Gercke on February 13, 1932, she passed away on May 10, 1990.
She is perhaps most famously remembered by Star Trek fans for her striking portrayal of Vina in “The Cage” (1964), the original pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. In that episode, she famously appeared with green skin, a memorable and iconic image that has resonated throughout the franchise’s history. When “The Cage” footage was later incorporated into the TOS two-part episode “The Menagerie,” her performance became known to an even wider audience.
Beyond Star Trek, Oliver had a significant career in both film and television, with numerous guest appearances on popular shows of her era. Her talents extended beyond acting; she was an accomplished aviator, attempting to fly a single-engine plane from New York to Moscow in 1967 (though she was denied permission to fly over Soviet airspace). She also became a television director and an author later in her life.
