ABOUT THE WORK
Tom Lovell gives us a historical rendition of what wrestling matches looked like at the games in Ancient Greece. The depiction shows two Adonis like men showing off their prowess and strength. The piece was probably for a publication or some sort of editorial work on ancient history. Tom Lovell was known as a history painter, with a strong love for the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. As an American illustrator, these drawings were very popular for academic publications and “pulp fiction,” books too.
Lovell said: “I consider myself a storyteller with a brush. I try to place myself back in imagined situations that would make interesting and appealing pictures. I am intent on producing paintings that relate to the human experience.”
