ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Henri Auguste Calixte César Serrur was a French academic painter, who lived in the early 1800s. His works focused on historical paintings and battle scenes (subjects were of his century or the ancient world). He painted the portraits of the nine Avignon popes and had a talent for capturing the academic male study.
He worked as a teacher of the arts and ran a successful art school focusing on still life and the academic male nude. In his lifetime, he was respected and loved by his patrons.
