Philoctetes on the Island of Lemnos (18th cent.) attributed to Francois Xavier Fabre (1766-1837), France (French). oil/canvas. Philoctetes was the subject of four different plays of ancient Greece, each written by one of the three major Greek authors on heroes and their struggles.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Fabre was a student of the famous Jacques-Louis David. Born in the city of Montpellier, Francois-Xavier Fabre fell in love with art at an early age. He later moved to Paris where he met Jacques-Louis David and worked as one of his primary students and teacher assistances. During the wild times of the French Revolution, Fabre journeyed south to Florence, Italy.

While in Italy, he met his wife who was Italian royalty. His work can be seen in Musée Fabre. Kisses from PARIS!!!
