ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Constantin Hansen was a Danish academic painter and artist. He was born in Rome, Italy and is the son of the famous artist Hans Hansen. His works and life are associated with the Golden Age of Danish Art movement and was an advocate of democratic reforms, consisting of voting rights for women, gay rights, and economic reform. Most of his work is portraits, cityscapes, landscapes, and historical drawings. He had a deep love of Greco-Roman themes.
In 1846, he married Magdalene Barbara Købke, and they had thirteen children. Magdalene became his partner in his artist studio and did everything from accounting, to marketing, to even sales. Of course, she was his best salesperson. He traveled with fellow Danish artists and was very open to meeting artists from other countries. However, he was known to have “rowdy artistic debates,” with French artists.
The model for this work was a local strongman and a landscaper for his neighbor. Kisses from PARIS!!!
