R.I.P. Kjell Nilsson.
Best known to sci-fi and cult-film fans as The Humungus in George Miller’s classic The Road Warrior — also known as Mad Max 2 — Nilsson helped create one of the most unforgettable villain images in post-apocalyptic cinema.
A Swedish weightlifter with a commanding physical presence, he brought a brutal, mythic masculinity to the screen: masked, muscular, theatrical, and terrifyingly calm. The Humungus was not just another wasteland villain. He became an icon of controlled menace — part warlord, part bodybuilder, part rock-and-roll nightmare — a figure who showed fans how sci-fi could turn the male body into a symbol of power, danger, and corrupted authority.

“Greetings from the Humungus! The Lord Humungus! The warrior of the wasteland, the ayatollah of rock and roll-ah!”
Rest in power, Kjell Nilsson. The wasteland remembers.
