BLACK HISTORY MONTH: “Taking pride in those ladies that made a difference for the black community and all women as a whole.”

Morgan State University alumna Valerie L. Thomas is an American scientist and inventor of the “illusion transmitter,” for which she received a patent in 1980. An illusion transmitter uses two parabolic mirrors to transmit 3D illusions or holograms of an object. The technology is still used by NASA to this day and was adapted for use in surgery, as well as for televisions and video screens.

Thomas was also responsible for developing the digital media formats that image processing systems used in the early years of NASA’s Landsat program. Currently 81 years old, this living STEM legend has received numerous awards, including the Goddard Space Flight Center Award of Merit and the NASA Equal Opportunity Medal.
