ABOUT THE ARTWORK:
The Dutch work features a respectful rendering of Jesus Christ. It is an Easter piece and shows Christ holding his cross as he ascends to heaven.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Cornelis van Haarlem was a successful, Dutch Golden Age painter. His work mainly consisted of realistic male and female portraits, that were used for marriage proposals/courting or business purposes in the Dutch tradesmen guilds of the era. His larger works, consisted of either Biblical subjects, or strong emphasis on both the male and female nudes. The academic male works always pulled inspiration from Italy or the stories of mythology. I later traveled to Rouen, France and worked as both an artist and teacher.
