ABOUT THE ARTWORK:

Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824–1904). Entitled, An idyll (Daphnis and Chloe). The piece was created in1852. It consists of an oil on canvas work, that is 212.1 × 155.9 cm (83.5 × 61.3 in). The piece can be seen at the Musée Massey, Tarbes, Hautes-Pyrénées

Some of his works and this one is in the city museum for the town of Tarbes, which is located in Southwestern France. The city garden museum is known as the Musée Massey.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

A successful French painter and sculptor in the style now known as Academicism. His paintings and works were so widely reproduced that he was “arguably the world’s most famous living artist by 1880.” Art historians, feel his ability to create and teach or mentor, was his best trait.
