BLACK HISTORY MONTH – “Understanding the Past to Heal and Grow”
A slave dealer inspects a prospective slave in this deceptively cheerful interpretation of slave purchasing. To those in the slave-trading business, enslaved people were nothing more than human chattel.
The photo is textbook racist, because the slave is “so happy” to be sold off from all he knows and his family. The artwork shows he knows his place and the whites are looking out for his best interests. Learn from the evils of the past, so we don’t repeat them.
