Punch is a New Zealand drama that follows the story of Jim, a young boxer who lives in a small, rural town. Jim is raised by his tough father, who trains him in boxing, but their relationship is strained due to Jim’s desire to break free from his father’s expectations. As Jim grows older, he befriends Whetu, a new student in town who is confident, charismatic, and openly gay. The friendship between Jim and Whetu soon deepens, and Jim begins to grapple with his own emotions, questioning his sexuality and the expectations placed on him by his family and society.
The film explores themes of masculinity, self-acceptance, and identity, with Jim struggling to reconcile his growing feelings for Whetu with the pressure to conform to traditional ideas of toughness and masculinity. Punch is a heartfelt and honest exploration of young love, personal growth, and the courage it takes to be true to oneself in a world that often judges people for being different. Through its powerful storytelling and emotional depth, Punch highlights the struggles and beauty of discovering one’s true self.
