“The Wrathful Achilles,” Sculpture by HW Bissen, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen, Denmark The title of this sculpture references the opening of Homer’s Iliad, where the Greek hero Achilles sits wrathfully in his tent, indignant at Agamemnon, commander of the Greek forces at Troy. HW Bissen, a Danish sculptor, created the work in the 1860s. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek’s setting of this work is noteworthy, as the shadows from the dim lighting underscore the umbrage felt by Achilles in his annoyed pose.
