Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Africa-American slaves. The day and vernacular of the holiday is a history lesson in itself. Before the age of tech and cell phones, communications was sometimes sparse. Facture in a war, and the fact of being dehumanized as a slave and only given information that the “masters,” deemed worthy for them. Thus, taking their freedom away.
Slaves in Texas hadn’t heard that they were freed. The news was delivered by Union soldier, Major General Gordon Granger; when he and his crew arrived in the port of Galveston, TX. News spread thru Texas. The first celebrations started in 1866 and President Joe Biden made it, through governance measures made it a federal holiday.
The day is one of reflection and joy. Regardless of the shade of your skin in the USA, take time to reflect upon the history. It is a day of joy, but also intellectual discussion on the issues of racism.
