La Mort de Démosthène – The Death of Demosthenes (1805) “Oil on canvas, 120 x 140 cm” [The Horvitz Collection, Wilmington, NC, USA] — Georges Rouget (French; 1783 – 1869)

Demosthenes, taking refuge in the temple of Neptune, killed himself rather than fall into the power of the Greeks.
Marie-Georges-Louis Rouget (August 26, 1783 – April 9, 1869) was a French neoclassical painter. He was a favorite student of Jacques-Louis David, whom he assisted in Brussels and collaborated on several large historical paintings. Later Rouget made one magnificent portrait of David.

Rouget entered the Prix de Rome competition with this painting in 1805. It was Jérôme Martin Langlois, another student of David, who won it in 1805.
