ANCIENT WORLD: Antinous & His Role as Beekeeper (Happy International Bee Day!)

May 20th is World Bee Day … Antinous (wearing a farmer’s sun hat) as Aristaeus, who saved the world’s bees by plunging into a sacred river to emerge with a miracle. As this statue in the Louvre shows, Antinous was identified by the Ancients with Aristaeus, the son of Apollo and the river-nymph Cyrene. Aristaeus taught humans the art of farming and cultivating crops and tending livestock and beekeeping. When all the bees died, Aristaeus plunged into a sacred river to find a divine miracle … just as Antinous plunged into the Nile to find deification and work miracles. Full story:
