ACADEMY (Académies): Danish Artist – Carl Bloch – 1863
We watch a very fit Samson toil away after falling to the loves of Delialah. Biblical pain and beauty for the male form all in one. This work is from the Danish School of the Academy Arts Movement. The Danish were fond of depicting very fit or muscular men for works featuring either biblical or mythological themes from ancient history.

Carl Bloch (Danish, 1834–1890). A wonderful artist from Denmark. This incredible work entitled, Samson and the Philistines, circa 1863. Oil on canvas 245.5 × 184 cm, and part of the fine art collection at the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.
