ABOUT:
✨ Discover Abstract Expressionism through masterpieces from our collection. 🎁 The museum stays open—just for you! Follow our guide, Jean-Pierre Criqui, curator at the Centre Pompidou, for an exceptional visit. Born in New York after the Second World War, Abstract Expressionism dominated American art from the 1940s to 1962 and brought together around fifteen painters. It is also known as the “New York School”, echoing the “School of Paris.” The works of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Joan Mitchell are characterised by their large formats and all-over compositions. Covering the entire canvas—with neither centre nor periphery—eliminates any depth of field. A spontaneous reflection of the artist’s inner world, Abstract Expressionism celebrates experimentation, self-assertion and freedom. Two main tendencies define it: Action Painting, with the famous dripping technique, and Color Field Painting. 📍Watch all episodes of our web series “The Centre Pompidou in Movements” 👉 https://bit.ly/CP_en_courants
