We asked the following to David St. Romain:
Is bread bad for muscle growth for men? The short answer is no! Bread can actually be very beneficial to adding on muscle mass. Now first let’s distinguish the difference between muscle mass and cellular muscle. Muscle mass includes water weight, fat, glycogen stores and inflammation throughout the muscle, causing it to swell and become full looking. Cellular muscle is the actual muscle tissue itself. Consuming bread in smaller amounts will help keep the muscle bellies full looking.
If you overeat on the bread, you can spill over and it turn into body fat. There are different types of breads that can cause you to spill over quicker such as white bread. Breads such as a sprouted grain bread won’t have as big of an impact with spilling over into fat storage. Bread in smaller amounts is beneficial if you are looking to fill out the muscle bellies and add a little bit of “bulk” weight. Bread won’t necessarily do anything for building cellular tissue though the sprouted grain breads do have a better nutrient profile than other breads. When I was actively competing in bodybuilding and powerlifting I would usually have 2 sprouted grain bagels every morning with my breakfast. Consuming a small amount of bread, such as a bagel, pre-workout is also beneficial to muscle mass. When we workout to build muscle mass, we are also building up lactic acid. Since bread is acidic, it will enhance the production of acid buildup during the workout and cause the muscle bellies to have a better pump and become fuller. If you are wanting to add a little muscle mass, adding a little bread is never a bad idea.
