ABOUT THE ARTIST:
John Flaxman was a prominent British sculptor, teacher of the arts, and draughtsman (drawing expert), and a consistent leading figure in both British and European Neoclassicism. He spent several years in Rome and Paris, where he produced his first book illustrations. In 1782, aged 27, the strapping Flaxman married his love, Anne Denman, who was later to assist him throughout his entire career. She was well-educated, and a devoted wife who traveled with him to Italy and later France. The two were also destined to spend time in Germany doing commissions, but that tour was later canceled due to lack of financing.
