ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Amable-Paul Coutan (1792–1837) was a successful French historical painter, who also did portraits. Most of his commissions were officers in the French military. He was born in Paris, France. He received scholarships when he was younger, and later studied in Italy in the prestigious French Academy in Rome.
