ACADEMY (Académies): Margaret C. Cook – “Leaves of Grass” – UK – 1912

153

Margaret C. Cook, wonderful academic artist from the UK, gives us two young friends in platonic love or otherwise; sharing the beauty of nature. An allegorical scene that at the same time documented country life. It was not uncommon for men to swim nude together or sun bath in the country in the early 1900s.

The painting was subsequently used in an illustrated edition of Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” originally published in 1913.
