LADIES, we love this piece. It captures the manliness of the subject and gives a lovely look at what life was like for those who worked in rural areas during ancient times (ancient Rome or Greece).
Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Desmarais (1756–1813), was a Neoclassical French painter. He specialized in landscape, academic male portraits, portraits, and historical pieces. His works are in museums in France, Italy, and private collections. He was named professor at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts of Florence (Florence, Italy) in the year 1793. He appears not to have returned to France with the turmoil war and the French Revolution. During the Napoleonic occupation of Northern Italy, he was recruited by Italian nobility to do portraits and historical male warrior paintings.
